Safely delivering MOX fuel to Japan
We continue to use our shipping expertise to deliver MOX Fuel to electric power companies in Japan.
Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies are manufactured in dedicated facilities in Europe and used in Japan as part of a long-term programme to provide secure and stable electricity supplies.
PNTL vessels have been transporting nuclear materials between Europe and Japan for more than 45 years, and has a flawless nuclear safety and security record.
In 2017 Pacific Heron and Pacific Egret delivered a cargo of 16 MOX fuel assemblies, that were manufactured in France, to the Takahama Nuclear Power Station.
Our purpose-built vessels are state-of-the-art and are manned by some of the most experienced nuclear mariners in the world.
They are fitted with special security equipment for transporting MOX fuel and for mutual protection they travel together, each escorting the other. The ships carry officers from the UK Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC), who provide on-board protection and are specially trained to protect nuclear facilities and materials.
The shipment of MOX fuel once again demonstrated our ability to transport nuclear cargos safely and securely around the world.
