NTS has been transporting nuclear material for decades and offers all the skills and capability required for a successful transport, whether that’s by road, rail, sea or air.
Whether it’s designing and delivering an entire transport operation, engineering and licensing a new package, or undertaking road, rail or maritime shipments as part of a multi-modal transport project, our focus is always on delivering success for our customers from the start of a journey to the end.
Consultancy services
As well as carrying out a physical transport, we also advise customers on many aspects of transport operations – anything from initial feasibility studies, criticality and shielding assessments through to licensing and security advice. We are able to offer one specialist service or an integrated suite of services depending on a customer’s particular requirements.
Infrastructure optimisation
A big part of what we do once we’ve devised a clear transport solution is to assess and optimise the transport infrastructure. For example, this could include the design and optioneering of packages, rail wagons and lifting beams.
Whatever the transport challenge, our aim is always to exceed customer expectations. We’ll devise a logistics plan that includes the most appropriate modes of transport – whether that’s road, rail, sea or air.

Safely delivering MOX fuel to Japan
We continue to use our shipping expertise to deliver MOX Fuel to electric power companies in Japan.
Shipment of high-level waste from the UK to Germany
Our expertise in shipping waste resulting from reprocessing was demonstrated when we completed the first of three shipments of high level waste to Germany at the end of 2020.
Transferring plutonium from Dounreay
In 2019 we used our rail, shipping and technical capabilities to complete a programme of complex, high-security transport operations to transfer civil separated plutonium held at Dounreay, to Sellafield.
