International nuclear shipment safely delivered

Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), the global leader in nuclear transport and logistics, has successfully completed its latest shipment of Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies from France to Japan.

The shipment, carried by Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd’s (PNTL) purpose-built vessels Pacific Heron and Pacific Egret, departed Cherbourg in France in early September and arrived safely at the Takahama Nuclear Power Station, in Japan, this week. The cargo contained MOX fuel assemblies destined for Units 3 and 4 at the plant.

This marks the ninth MOX transport completed by NTS during its anniversary year with PNTL celebrating 50 years of safe and secure nuclear transport operations.

The voyage was conducted in full compliance with all national and international regulations, with robust security measures in place throughout. Our purpose-built vessels are state-of-the-art and are manned by some of the most experienced nuclear mariners in the world.

Ben Whittard, NTS co-CEO, said: “This successful delivery demonstrates how key NTS and PNTL are to global nuclear ambitions. We’re committed to safety, security, and our experienced teams and specialist vessels ensure that these critical shipments are carried out to the highest standards.”

Ciara Middlehurst, NTS co-CEO, added: “There is a great deal of international co-operation which goes into these complex moves and working closely with our partners is essential to its completion. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this shipment a success.”

NTS works closely with international regulators, governments, and industry partners to maintain the integrity of the global nuclear supply chain. The company remains dedicated to supporting low-carbon energy generation through the secure transport of nuclear material.

Also, as part of the voyage, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary’s Strategic Escort Group’s (SEG) officers and crew have successfully completed an extraordinary fundraising challenge that saw them collectively walk 23.6 million steps during their deployment from France to Japan.

Every step of the challenge, which has so far raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK (CRUK), was logged on board the two nuclear vessels during their successful deployment for the latest MOX shipment.

Officers and crew contributed steps on treadmills, cross-trainers, and during walks on deck whenever conditions allowed.

A fantastic effort from everyone involved.
