Ministerial visit to NTS
NTS welcomed Government Minister Andrew Bowie MP and Simon Fell MP to their Barrow marine terminal where they learnt more about NTS specialist capabilities and also took in a tour of the rail and shipping facilities.
During the visit, on 21 September 2023, Mr Bowie, Minister for Nuclear and Networks with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, met with rail staff and took the opportunity to sit in the cab of one of the locomotives where he spoke with staff about NTS’s fantastic rail operations.
He was then taken on board Pacific Heron and met with crew while he was shown around the bridge, the clean room and one of the holds with Master. The minister also heard more from various crew members about life onboard and at sea.
A number of Civil Nuclear Constabulary officers gave a minigun demonstration and explained the equipment that’s needed during high security operations at sea.
Mr Bowie said he had thoroughly enjoyed his tour of the terminal and appreciated learning more of the vital work and operations carried out by NTS.
He said: “It’s been fantastic to see and learn about the incredible work being undertaken here at NTS, in particular, through its shipping and rail divisions.
“NTS is delivering vital work for the nuclear industry around the UK but also globally with its skills, expertise and technical know-how all being developed here in the UK and then exported around the world.”
The MPs were also met by Nuclear Decommissioning Authority executives including CEO David Peattie.
The ministerial visit demonstrated NTS’s world-leading capabilities in support of the government’s focus on nuclear power and lowering carbon emissions.
